How does Haltermann Carless, a mid-sized specialty chemicals company, combine tradition, transformation and entrepreneurial change? A CEO interview published in Handelsblatt’s special edition “The Future of the Chemical Industry”.
Peter Friesenhahn, CEO Haltermann Carless Group
The chemical industry is coming under increasing pressure. High energy costs, geopolitical uncertainty, growing regulation and global competition are fundamentally changing the economic environment. For many companies, the question is therefore how to successfully transform their business while ensuring it remains fit for the future. While the debate often focuses on strategies, new technologies and political measures, the decisive factor for success ultimately lies within the company itself: clear priorities, consistent execution and the ability to build on existing strengths, rethink them and apply them to changing markets and new business areas. The example of mid-sized specialty chemicals company Haltermann Carless shows what this transformation can look like in practice. CEO Peter Friesenhahn discusses the company’s approach.
Mr Friesenhahn, Haltermann Carless is one of the world’s oldest chemical companies. How does a company with roots dating back to 1859 continue this tradition, particularly given the current situation in the chemical industry?
We combine deep expertise in hydrocarbon chemistry with close customer relationships. As early as the late 19th century, our founders helped enable mobility through the development of Petrol.
Today, we develop specialty products for markets with demanding technical requirements, from motorsport to aerospace. Technologies and markets change. Over generations, we have learned how to continually apply our industrial expertise in new ways.
But high energy costs, regulation and global competition are a reality. We will not solve today’s challenges with the same thinking that has caused or exacerbated many of the structural problems we face. For me, that means a clear focus, fast decision-making and a consistent commitment to performance and customer value. If you wait for the conditions around you to improve, you have already lost.
How have you changed Haltermann Carless in concrete terms?
We have restructured the business consistently, divested business areas, reduced complexity, clarified responsibilities and focused our resources on the areas where we can achieve long-term growth.
For me, transformation has to work in the market. It has to make us stronger, create added value for our customers and deliver financial results that give us the scope to invest. And it can only succeed if our employees and owners support this journey. That is why I am grateful for the long-term backing of the International Chemical Investors Group (ICIG).
What factors will determine whether Haltermann Carless remains successful in the future?
One of our strengths is our ability to work with different feedstock pathways. Our production facilities do not fundamentally care whether the feedstock used is fossil-based or renewable. This technology-neutral approach enables us to support the different technology pathways pursued by our customers.
What will matter is how quickly we can turn new feedstocks, processes and technologies into viable businesses.
Innovation alone is not enough. It has to reach the customer and make economic sense. That is why we invest where our capabilities can make a difference and where our customers need new solutions.
