Interview: Haltermann Carless GTL products open up new possibilities

Written by Author: Sandra Sparenberg | Nov 7, 2025

Gas-to-Liquids (GTL) technology unlocks new opportunities for producing high-purity solvents and specialty fluids. Outperforming conventional mineral oil-based products, GTL offers the quality of premium isoparaffins while bridging the gap between fossil resources and more sustainable solutions. With the launch of Halpasol® G, Haltermann Carless introduces an innovative product range that meets the highest technical standards, sets new benchmarks in purity, and delivers clear sustainability benefits. In this interview, Sarah Heinrici, Head of Product Line Middle Distillates , explains why Halpasol® G is a genuine alternative and how customers benefit from Haltermann Carless’s many years of expertise.

Sarah Heinrici, with Halpasol® G, Haltermann Carless is focusing on a new source of raw materials, namely GTL (Gas-to-Liquids). What prompted this decision?

GTL technology gives us the opportunity to offer solvents and other specialty products at an even higher level of purity than we can already offer with our existing portfolio.

Traditional mineral oil-based products quickly reach their limits in very demanding applications. High-priced isoparaffins, on the other hand, are not economical for every application.

Our new GTL-based products, such as Halpasol G, close this gap. They combine maximum purity and stability with environmental benefits - all at an attractive cost structure.

For us, the new product range is an important step towards greater diversity and exploring new markets – and for our customers with demanding applications, it offers real added value.

What distinguishes Halpasol® G from competition?

What sets our new product range apart is the unique combination of technical performance and ultra-high purity. Our Halpasol G product range delivers impressive results across multiple dimensions.

Halpasol G has an extremely high isoparaffinic content, near zero aromatics, sulphur-free, low-odour and colourless. This is especially important for sensitive formulations, such as those used in the cosmetics industry. In addition, the products are readily biodegradable and possess excellent thermal and oxidative stability. Another advantage of the synthetic GTL process is its consistent quality, stability and, ultimately, security of supply.

This enables us to offer our customers a modern alternative to classic crude oil-based products that sets standards in both technical and regulatory terms.

For which industries and applications are GTL products such as Halpasol® G particularly suitable?

GTL-based products such as our Halpasol G are extremely versatile. In cosmetics and personal care, their high purity and sensory benefits stand out, being odourless and providing an excellent base that enhances the perception of added fragrances, while delivering a smooth skin feel.

In high-tech lubricants, metalworking fluids, and glass processing, Halpasol G demonstrates outstanding thermal and oxidative stability, making them ideal for demanding industrial environments. In addition to their high purity, paints and varnishes also benefit from a narrow boiling range.

Best of all, Halpasol G helps our customers comply with strict regulations, develop safe formulations and, at the same time, contribute to more sustainable products.

FAQ: Halpasol® G - GTL products from Haltermann Carless

1. What are GTL products and what do they stand for?

GTL (Gas-to-Liquids)-based products are created by converting natural gas into high-purity liquid hydrocarbons. They are considered a modern source of raw materials for solvents, speciality oils and lubricants – with advantages in terms of purity, consistency and environmental compatibility.

2. Why are GTL products considered a bridging technology?

GTL products are currently derived from natural gas using advanced chemical processes that produce exceptionally pure and consistent materials. Whilst presently their carbon footprint is comparable to that of high-quality mineral oil products, GTL technology provides a platform for future low-carbon pathways. For example, through the use of renewable power, renewable hydrogen, or biogas as feedstocks. This makes GTL a realistic transitional solution on the journey toward more sustainable formulations.

3. What advantages do GTL products offer over mineral oil-based solutions?

  • Highest purity (virtually free of aromatics and sulphur-free)
  • Consistent quality through controlled production
  • Readily biodegradable

  • Thermally and oxidatively stable
  • Colourless and virtually odourless → ideal for sensitive applications

These properties make GTL products particularly attractive for demanding industries.

4. How does Haltermann Carless position itself in the field of GTL products?

Haltermann Carless uses GTL as a strategic element of product development. With many years of industry experience and technical expertise, the company develops GTL-based products such as Halpasol® G to set new standards in purity, performance and regulatory safety.

5. For which industries are GTL products particularly suitable?

GTL products offer advantages for many industries, e.g.:

  • Cosmetics & personal care
  • High-end lubricants
  • Paints & coatings
  • Metalworking
  • Special formulations in regulated markets
  • Pharmaceutical
  • Agrochemical

6. What role do GTL products play in Haltermann Carless' future product strategy?

GTL is an integral part of the innovation strategy. The company sees GTL as a stable platform for expanding its portfolio – with products such as Halpasol® G that meet technical requirements while contributing to safer and more environmentally friendly applications.
